Site Reliability Engineer - IBM AIX

We are looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to support our team responsible for building, managing, maintaining, deploying, and securing mission-critical services to make the Internet work. Responsibilities:
- Participate in architecture, provisioning, and planning of our IBM hardware ecosystem
- Installation, configuration, and maintenance of physical hosts used to support production and non-production applications
- Provisioning of PowerVM hosts per requirements
- Configuration and certification of AIX images for deployment according to all required CIS and security controls for use by product engineering teams
- Coordination with other technical staff to deploy systems and software
- Performance of operational support functions, including problem isolation and resolution
- Documentation of processes, procedures, configurations, and deployment plans
- Provide critical technical leadership in the IBM/AIX realm
- Regularly report progress to management
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation with other team members as necessary
- Work with software developers and database administrators to plan and deploy services and software
Our ideal candidate will have excellent technical skills, excellent troubleshooting instincts, curiosity about new technologies, and strong investment in maintaining secure and available services. The team is responsible for critical internet services and our expectation is that everyone contributes to the team in keeping these systems up and running.
The candidate must have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 8+ years of experience deploying and operating mission-critical systems
- Excellent understanding of IBM POWER systems
- Excellent understanding of HMC/NIM/VIOS setup and ongoing maintenance
- Strong automation experience - Not just developing automation, but knowing why we automate and what to automate
- Solid troubleshooting skills and the curiosity to drive to an answer
- Understanding of physical servers and the demands of maintaining them
- Fluency in the AIX operating system
- Fluency in the Linux operating system
- Strong understanding of and production experience with PowerVC
- Strong written and verbal communication skills – able to clearly and succinctly describe complex issues
- Familiarity with networking protocols and systems
Desired Skills, Experience, and Attributes:
- Experience with IBM POWER hardware and AIX operating systems
- Experience with ServiceNow
- Experience with a high-level scripting language such as Python
- Experience with network troubleshooting using such tools as ping, traceroute and dig
- Deployment automation experience using tools such as Ansible
- Experience working with teams using Kanban and/or Scrum a plus
- Experience maintaining IBM hardware and software stacks in a demanding, always-available enterprise environment
- Experience with database systems running on the AIX operating system
This position is based in our Reston, VA office and offers a hybrid work schedule.
The pay range is $135,800 - $183,800.
The anticipated annual base salary range for this position is noted above, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience. Verisign offers a discretionary bonus which is based on individual and company performance, and certain roles may be eligible for discretionary stock awards.
